Ndejje Hoppers win maiden National League, set for Varsity Games

Uganda’s sports power house, Ndejje University has won its first major maiden men’s National Handball League title after dethroning defending Champion Prison Spears in a season climax at the university’s Luwero Main Campus.

The university’s women side settled for second position on the league table after losing to Prisons 22-29 in second round final match at Mandela Stadium, Namboole and 20-26 in the season openerat Ndejje.

The university men’s side popularly known as the Hoppers flog-marched the consecutive three-time consecutive champions, Prison Spears 34 – 31 in the match that lasted only 15 minutes. The match repeat was in fulfillment of the IHF rules to compensate forlast month encounter that did not last full time because of the darkness that had cropped in at Ndejje ground..

The two rivalling sides had earlier settled for 24-24 draw in the second round match two weeks ago in Mandela Stadium.

The newly crowned national champions was leading 29-24 in a tightly contested encounter when the referee blew the whistle to suspend the second round league match on account of poor visibility.

University Head Coach George Isabirye and Assistant Henry Acidri all in jovial mood said the campaign to win the national championship was a protracted one.

“It has taken us a cool four years of waiting in the wings amid stiff opposition from Prisons and Police among other giants clubs. We are happy that our strategy has paid off at last,” Coach Isabrye said.

“It has been a big struggle to reach that level. Our eyes are now set on the forthcoming Inter University Ndejje 2017 Games just at the corner. The league has given our women and men’s teams the required exposure. We have known our weaknesses and solutions as we prepare for the Games,” Acidri said.

The AUUS Ndejje University 2017 Games are due December 16 – 21, 2017 at Luwero Main Campus.
