Community Participation and Solid Waste Management in Kampala, Uganda: A Case of Makindye Division.

Abstract:
The study was carried in Makindye division of Kampala. The main objective was examining the effect of community participation on solid waste management. The specific objectives were; to examine the effect of awareness-raising on solid waste management; to examine the effect of decision-making on solid waste management; and to assess the effect of community contributions on solid waste management.
The study adopted a cross sectional survey design that used both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. The study population was 323 out of which a targeted sample of 216 was selected. A total of 140 responded to the questionnaire.
Twelve (12) key informant interviews were conducted. The findings revealed very strong positive and significant correlation between awareness raising and solid waste management (r=0.235; P value = 0.005); decision making and solid waste management (r= 0.459, P value =0.003); community contribution and solid waste management (r= 0.585, P value is 0.000). In conclusion, awareness raising significantly influences solid waste management. It was recommended that this gap that was identified in the study should be addressed by KCCA in Makindye Division.
Also decision making significantly influences solid waste management; however, KCCA should involve the communities in key areas of decision making like soliciting views and ideas when implementing the activities.
Lastly, community contribution significantly influences solid waste management. KCCA should use important strategies like use of the mass media to engage with the communities in managing solid waste.
