Factors Influencing Performance of Girls in Secondary Schools in Kamuli District, Uganda.


ABSTRACT:
The study examined factors which influence girls’ performance in secondary schools in Kamuli District. Study objectives were;
To find out how teacher competency affects the performance of girls in Secondary schools of Kamuli District,
Assess how family support and environment affects girls’ performance;
Examine how the school environment affects the performance of the girls in secondary education in Kamuli district.
A descriptive research design was applied using qualitative approach and quantitative approach. Data was collected by interview, survey and documentary analysis methods. The identification and selection of respondents was by purposive and random sampling.
The target respondents comprised of Head teachers, teachers, students, parents and community leaders. Data was analyzed by use of descriptive statistics to derive frequencies and percentages.
The findings revealed that factors influencing performance among girls in secondary schools included lack of school fees, sanitary pads, and the patriarchal society that favours boys against girls in access to education opportunities, there were also teacher factors like training, teacher shortage and motivation that affected girl’s performance.
It was recommended that in order for Government and the private sector to improve girls’ academic performance they must address the challenge of selfish cultural connotations that has affected both the school and communities in the District in providing opportunity for girls to participate in school and perform well.
