The Role of Sports Women in Community Development in Seguku Ward, Wakiso District. Uganda.



ABSTRACT:
This study focused on the roles of sports women in community development in Seguku Ward, Wakiso district. the general objective of the study was to assess the roles of sports women in community development. the specific objectives, were:
To establish the contribution of sports women towards community development,
Determine the challenges they face, and identify the strategies that can be used to overcome the challenges. A cross-sectional design was adopted because data collection was carried out only once so as to arrive at a viable conclusion. The researcher used a target population of 137 community members. The researcher used a sample size of 100 respondents out of 137 community members.
The study used stratified sampling and random sampling techniques while selecting the respondents representing different sections of the community. The study considered two data sources of primary and secondary.
Data was collected using- administered questionnaires, focus group discussions and interviews. For data credibility, the research relied on validity and reliability that was subjected to two methods. Data was processed through data editing and data coding. The researcher used statistical techniques of data analysis(SPSS) and excel version 16.0 which was used to determine the relationship between roles of sports women and community development in Seguku Ward. With regards to the findings sportswomen have contributed less to community development; there is also ignorance in regards to sportswomen as indicated by some community members and also high levels of discrimination in regards to sportswomen and development activities. Secondly challenges faced according to study findings indicated that girls and women have limited time to get involved in sports and as well development, cultural traditional settings favor men more than women and also the move to modernity ostracizes traditional social arrangements. Strategies suggested in the findings were addressing gender inequality and integrating sports within development activities.
The conclusions were that sportswomen’s contribution towards community development still remains a less known organ amidst low levels of awareness and also lack of conditions that favor women’s participation in development activities. The study recommended that government should amend on the gender policies to ensure sports women are also given regard and free grounds that recognize their contribution, ministries of development should incorporate sports in development activities, community leaders should recognize the roles and contribution of sports women, there is need to change people’s perceptions about gender roles in development activities.
