Ndejje University continues to stand at the forefront of technological innovation as it showcases its revolutionary AI-driven projects at the NCHE Expo 2025 in Kamukuzi, Mbarara District Headquarters Open Grounds. The AI Research Center, located within the Faculty of Science and Computing, is leading the exhibition with several cutting-edge projects aimed at addressing pressing challenges in education, public health, and student engagement.
The University’s team at the event includes key experts from the AI Research Center:
- Mr. Alex Luyima (Lecturer, Faculty of Science and Computing)
- Mr. Herbert Bukoli (Lecturer, Faculty of Science and Computing)
- Mr. Twaha Kateete (Lecturer, Faculty of Science and Computing)
Together, they are presenting innovative solutions that harness artificial intelligence to improve societal wellbeing, particularly in education and public health. The showcased projects include:
1. NDU Lesson Plan Generator: AI for Educators
Education is at the heart of Ndejje University’s innovation agenda, and the NDU Lesson Plan Generator is a testament to this commitment. This AI-powered tool is designed to assist educators in developing well-structured, curriculum-aligned lesson plans efficiently. By automating the lesson planning process, this system saves valuable time for teachers and ensures a high standard of education delivery across various learning institutions.
Developed by a team of six researchers from Ndejje University’s AI Research Center and in collaboration with experts from the Faculty of Education, the NDU Lesson Plan Generator simplifies lesson plan creation for O’Level educators. Teachers no longer need to spend hours manually planning their lessons, allowing them to focus on engaging with students and improving learning outcomes.
The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) has already recognized the tool’s potential impact on curriculum implementation, a step toward ensuring AI adoption for transforming education in Uganda.
2. WASHtsApp: Your WhatsApp Assistant for Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
Addressing public health remains a critical priority for Ndejje University. WASHtsApp is a WhatsApp-based chatbot designed to provide instant, reliable information on clean water usage, sanitation, and hygiene. This tool helps both urban and rural communities in Uganda access crucial health tips, thereby promoting better sanitation and hygiene practices.
Users simply need to save +256 760 299775 on their phone and start a conversation on WhatsApp to receive tailored, expert-reviewed information in text or voice format. WASHtsApp’s ease of access through the widely used messaging app ensures that even remote communities can benefit from valuable health information.
The project aims to improve overall community health by spreading awareness on water purification, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices. Through continuous development, WASHtsApp plans to expand its services, offering more local languages and region-specific health information.
3. ATTENTION SPAN DETECTOR
A tool that “uses artificial intelligence to assess attention in lecture room settings Amidst Digital Distraction.”
In the era of digital learning, keeping students engaged—especially in large classroom settings—has become a significant challenge. The Learner Attention Tracker is an AI-powered tool that monitors students’ attention levels in both physical and online classroom environments.
Developed by Mr. Herbert Bukoli, a PhD candidate and lecturer at the AI Research Center, this system analyzes students’ engagement patterns during lectures. It helps instructors identify when students are distracted, allowing them to adjust teaching strategies in real time for improved learning outcomes.
The tool aims to combat the growing problem of digital distractions in classrooms, enhancing the overall effectiveness of teaching and helping educators improve student performance. This tool automatically tracks attention levels, providing educators with real-time data on engagement and attention patterns. By reducing the manual burden of monitoring student focus, it empowers instructors to adjust their approaches and improve academic performance.
Exhibition Purpose and Future Impact
