Ndejje University held a heartfelt Thanksgiving Service in honor of the late Bishop Michael Ssenyimba, celebrating a life devoted to faith, education, and national service.
The service brought together members of the University community, the Church, family, and friends to reflect on a legacy that continues to shape Ndejje University and beyond. Bishop Ssenyimba is remembered for his instrumental role in strengthening the University’s foundation as a Christian-based institution, while championing excellence in higher education.
Remarks delivered on behalf of the Vice Chancellor by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Dr. Christopher Samuel Mayanja, highlighted Bishop Ssenyimba’s transformative leadership. His tenure was marked by significant milestones, including the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering and Survey, which reinforced Ndejje University’s niche in the sciences. His vision ensured that the University remained committed to producing graduates equipped for innovation and national development.
He also oversaw a period of remarkable institutional growth. It was during his leadership that Ndejje University attained its charter, elevating its international visibility and redefining its outlook. Many of the University’s iconic buildings were constructed during his time, including the tallest structure now proudly named the Bishop Ssenyimba Complex in his honor. His passion for environmental stewardship was equally evident through his active involvement in tree planting initiatives, contributing to the lush greenery that defines the University today.
Bishop Ssenyimba’s leadership extended beyond infrastructure. He strengthened the University’s quality assurance systems, initiated the Human Resource policy, and introduced frameworks such as the students’ sports policy: laying the foundation for Ndejje’s reputation as a sports powerhouse. His efforts in attracting students and supporting the introduction of the loan scheme widened access to higher education and transformed countless lives.
Family members paid tribute to his unwavering dedication, noting that he served the University with love and commitment throughout his 11-year tenure as Vice Chancellor. They expressed gratitude to the University for organizing the Thanksgiving Service and for standing with them in celebrating his life.
In a moving sermon, The Right Reverend Frederick Jackson Baalwa(Bishop of Kampala diocese) described Bishop Ssenyimba as the epitome of reliability and faithfulness. Drawing from scriptures such as 2 Timothy 4:8, 1 Kings 8:56, and 1 Corinthians 4:2, he reminded the congregation that faithfulness is rooted in God’s own faithfulness. He emphasized that Bishop Ssenyimba lived as a true servant of God: humble, dependable, and committed to serving both the Church and the community. His life, he noted, stands as a powerful reminder that God rewards faithfulness in His time.
The preacher challenged all present to reflect on their own legacy, asking what they will be remembered for when their time on earth comes to an end.
The Thanksgiving Service was organized by the University Chaplain, Rev. Damalie Nalubwama, and was graced with uplifting worship from the Grace Harmonies, whose melodies added a deeply spiritual atmosphere to the occasion.
Bishop Ssenyimba’s legacy remains firmly rooted in both academia and the Church. He bridged the gap between public service and spiritual leadership, leaving behind a University strengthened in structure, spirit, and purpose. His life’s work continues to inspire generations to pursue excellence, serve faithfully, and uphold the values of integrity and devotion.
As the Ndejje University community continues to grow, it does so on a foundation he helped build, one defined by faith, knowledge, and a commitment to transforming society.
