Ndejje University has taken an important step toward enhancing iour digital Library infrastructure by participating in the DSpace Technical Workshop held at Uganda Christian University’s Hamu Mukasa Library from 8th–10th December 2025.
The workshop, organized by the Consortium of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL) with support from the Invest in Open Infrastructure (IOI) fund, brought together Universities committed to strengthening repository systems, improving metadata standards, and advancing open access in Uganda.
Mr. Stephanas Galinnya, the University Librarian and Mr. Allan Walusimbi, Team Leader Academic Information System–DICTS, repesented Ndejje University and their participation brought together both the technical and administrative expertise required to strengthen the University’s digital repository infrastructure. As key custodians of NDUIR’s development and sustainability, their involvement ensured that Ndejje University was well positioned to benefit from the workshop’s hands-on technical training, strategic discussions, and best practices in repository management.
Over the three-day program, they engaged in intensive training designed to deepen institutional capacity in both the technical and administrative aspects of repository management. The sessions focused on practical skills needed to maintain a reliable, standards-compliant, and globally visible institutional repository.
Key areas of training included:
- Installation and upgrading of DSpace platforms, ensuring institutions run secure and up-to-date systems.
- Structuring and managing communities and collections to support organized and intuitive access to digital content.
- Item and metadata editing, with emphasis on international best practices such as COAR vocabularies, rights metadata, and improved discoverability.
- Configuration of OAI-PMH and Handle services, which enable global harvesting and stable persistent identifiers.
- User management and repository governance, critical for sustaining long-term repository operations.
Participation in this workshop equips Ndejje University with the expertise required to improve the performance and visibility of the Ndejje University Institutional Repository (NDUIR). The University’s representatives will apply the knowledge obtained to enhance metadata quality, strengthen policies, optimize system configurations, and advance the overall user experience for researchers and students.
Ndejje University expresses gratitude to CUUL, UCU Hamu Mukasa Library, and the Invest in Open Infrastructure Fund for organizing this important capacity-building initiative. The university remains committed to enhancing its digital research infrastructure and contributing actively to Uganda’s growing open access and scholarly communication landscape
