Ndejje University today had the honor of hosting its Chancellor, Bishop Hannington Mutebi, for a deeply impactful pastoral visit that left both students and staff renewed in purpose and spirit.
The visit began with an engaging meeting with student leaders, followed by a vibrant community gathering that brought together the wider university family. Set against the backdrop of a busy academic season, as students prepare for upcoming examinations, the atmosphere was both reflective and hopeful.
In her welcoming remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Canon Prof. Olivia Nassaka Banja, expressed gratitude for the Chancellor’s continued guidance and presence. She noted that the university is currently in a demanding academic period and acknowledged the steady progress made since the Chancellor’s last visit, particularly the growth of the chapel. She also addressed the community’s sorrow over the loss of students, emphasizing unity in mourning and prayer.
Bishop Mutebi conveyed warm greetings, including those from his wife, and commended the university’s leadership for its ongoing developments, including the milestone of a new constitution. He reassured the community of solidarity with those who have lost loved ones, emphasizing compassion and togetherness during difficult times.
At the heart of his message was a powerful reflection on servant leadership, drawn from Philippians 2:3–11 and John 13:10–17. Referencing Christ washing the disciples’ feet, the Bishop underscored humility as the true foundation of leadership. He challenged the community to rethink leadership not as status, but as service.
“Whenever you are called to lead, you are called to serve,” he emphasized, urging students to pursue excellence with humility throughout their academic journey. He warned against pride, describing it as a barrier that fosters insecurity and distances leaders from those they are meant to serve.
In a striking reminder, he noted that Jesus did not merely teach humility. He demonstrated it. By performing one of the lowest tasks, Christ redefined leadership through action. “God calls us to lead by example,” the Bishop said, pointing to the responsibility of caring for others and walking alongside those in need.
He further encouraged the community to embrace obedience, assuring them that God honors those who remain faithful. “When you wait upon the Lord, it will never be in vain,” he affirmed, reinforcing the promise of divine guidance and provision.
The visit concluded with a renewed call for the Ndejje community to embody humility, outreach, and service in all aspects of life. Bishop Mutebi’s message resonated deeply, leaving a lasting impression on students and staff alike, a reminder that true leadership is found not in position, but in selfless service to others.
