Counsellor's Corner: Fear
Fear
Fear is an enemy of peace, of development and progress.
Many times people have plans, have dreams, have ideas which if implement can lead to progress but they are held back by FEAR.
A student has the answer but fears to raise the hand and say it before the class. You are asked to make a presentation but you give it up to another person just because you fear audience. A lot of violence in a home between husband and wife but fear to let-go, or to communicate. Fear to start up business or project, fear to go back to school.
Whenever you are going to address people or to enter a big person’s office, or to do an interview or to propose to a lady, or to test for HIV and you realize fear is engulfing you, take deep breath through the mouth and breathe out through the nose at least 8 times, by doing this you are releasing tension, gaining courage and confidence. Calming down and reducing anxiety. You can also hold tight a pen in your hand to avoid people seeing your hands shaking.
Do self talk: “these are also human beings and they are not going to beat me after all, I am the one in control, if I make a mistake, I am human.” Face your fears. Don’t run away or avoid those things, items, situations or persons you fear. Practice public speaking with smaller groups.
Start now that, that you have always wanted to do. Avoid postponing. Start small within your means. Is it buying land, building a house, proposing to that lady, starting a project. Don’t fear to start, you can never accomplish what you have not started. You can take a longer route but eventually reach where you are going. Don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself to reach in the shortest time yet you don’t have what it takes. It is okay to build a house for 7 years slowly within your means, you are not in competition with one who has what it takes and can build his in six months. When you start, you are motivated to finish but if you accept fear to control you, you will remain where you are, no growth, no development, no progress.
If you are struggling with confidence building come let’s talk. It could be tressing its roots from childhood and parenting, a personality, past experience of bullying, environment and trauma. With effort you can overcome your fears.
Love you all.
Stay blessed.
